How do we live
with a river?

Parliament of
Blue Spaces

EN
The exhibition invites us to explore shared visions for the future of the Neckar River. Through small installations and technological experiments on the Neckar Island, the voices of the city of Stuttgart, the Waterways Authority, the river, the climate, urban society, future generations, animals and plants come together. A space for thought emerges between information and visions, where the perspectives of the participating stakeholders become apparent.

In 2027, we aim to convene in the Parliament of the Blue Spaces, located right in the middle of the exhibition, to discuss how these differing interests can be reconciled and forge a new alliance through regular parliamentary sessions, fostering a shared life with the river.

The exhibition 'Parliament of the Blue Spaces' will be on display from April to October 2027 on the Neckar Island in Stuttgart. It forms part of the International Building Exhibition StadtRegion Stuttgart 2027, held to mark the 100th anniversary of the completion of the Weissenhofsiedlung, a significant example of modern architecture. The exhibition aims to assess the legacy of Modernism in architecture and to develop modern urban planning in a contemporary manner.

The Neckarinsel association is seizing this opportunity to critically examine the management of the river over the past 100 years. Initially a loose initiative, the association's members have focused on the Neckar and its significance for the city for the past five years. The ‘Parliament of the Blue Spaces’ is an experiment designed to explore democratic processes in harmony with nature and new forms of collaboration, responsibility and participation that this could give rise to.

The exhibition and its supporting programme are a collaboration between Neckarinsel e.V., the Studio for Co-Productive River Design Agency Apéro, and the Office for Visual Investigation and Creative Direction Seasonal Fruit.
